The Comfort Can Challenge is a non-perishable food drive that Mrs. Comfort started several years ago, first with her homeroom and then the 8th grade, challenging her students with a canned food drive where she would match their donations, can-for-can! It has since expanded to a school wide effort, where Mrs. Comfort matches the homeroom with the most cans, which is usually between 300 - 600 cans of food!
The BCS mega-can donation will benefit G.I.F.T.,(God's Interfaith Food Table,) right here in Berlin, located at the Lutheran church and sponsored by four local churches. Food is then distributed weekly to area families in need.
As Mrs. Comfort states, "This really is a win-win situation. Hungry people receive some much needed food, but our students receive something equally valuable- an understanding that if everyone does a "little" something, something "big" can happen. We can make the world a better place. My students also find out that community service can be fun as they have a great time counting and sorting cans!"
To make this a little more accessible for our students, we have estimated that 900 cans will provide a large bag of groceries for a family each week for a year. Did you know that if every person in our school brought in just one can, we would reach that goal?
Cans and non-perishable food items can be dropped off in Mrs. Comfort's room, (66,) or left at the school offices. Unfortunately, Mrs. Comfort has no room for paper products or toiletries, so the donations are asked to be in the form of cans and/or non-perishable food items.
Mrs. Comfort's Can Challenge runs now through the last day before spring break (April 13th,) - so PLEASE help us make this the biggest year yet, and bring in your cans today!
