Communicable Diseases Information

Illness at school

Sometimes it happens. Your child becomes ill in school, and the school nurse has determined that your child should be sent home. To ensure the smoothest solution:

  • Have a plan in place in the event your child becomes ill at school
  • Keep all emergency forms up-to-date with the school
  • Provide other contact names and phone numbers, if you can't be reached

And remember, if your child reports not feeling well in the morning before school, please take a few minutes to check their temperature. DO NOT send your child to school with a fever or illness, even if you have medicated with Tylenol or Motrin. It is unfair to expose other students to the illness, and your child will need rest to recover from the illness.

May Note Return to School Until After 24 hours if Child has:

Conjunctivitis:
Child needs to be examined by their health care provider if conjunctivitis is suspected at which time a note to return to school must be obtained. If conjunctivitis is diagnosed, the child needs to be on medication for at least 24 hours before returning to school.

Fever:
Child needs to be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications before returning to school. A child with a temperature of 100 degrees or more MUST stay home from school.

Strep Throat:
Child needs to be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning to school.

Vomiting and/or Diarrhea:
Child may not return to school for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Must See School Nurse Before Returning to School if Child has:

Chicken Pox:
Child needs to remain home until they are no longer breaking out in lesions, and all lesions have scabbed over.

Head Lice and Nits:
Child must be treated with a lice shampoo and may not return to school until they have been cleared by school nurse.

All communicable diseases must be reported to the school nurse!

A note from the student's health provider must accompany a student's return for any contagious illness.

NJ Family Care

NJ Family Care provides quality, free, or low-cost coverage for uninsured children and teens 18 and younger. In fact, this program already covers tens of thousands of New Jersey Children.

NJ FamilyCare is not a welfare program - it offers full health coverage through a variety of recognized Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO's).  And, it's another step toward New Jersey's goal of making sure that health coverage is available for every child in the state who needs it.
